Notes
A succulent native of the Portuguese sea cliffs and shingle, with a strong fennel-and-citrus flavour. In the garden it wants full sun and a sharply drained, sandy or gravelly spot; it copes with salt spray and drought but not with wet clay. Pick the young fleshy shoots in spring and early summer, before flowering, for pickles or to serve with fish; do not strip wild plants.
