Notes
Sown in autumn and harvested dry in May–June; it needs deep, well-drained, lime-free soil and fixes plenty of nitrogen, so it also makes an excellent green manure dug in at flowering. The seeds are bitter and toxic raw: soak them for a day, boil for about an hour, then keep them in running water (or change the water several times a day) for several days until the bitterness is gone, and store in salted water.
